Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Spokane WA
735 PM PDT Wed Mar 14 2018 .SYNOPSIS... More typical spring like weather is expected with showers continuing at times through the weekend. Temperatures will be near average for this time of the year. && .DISCUSSION... Update: Isolated showers continue to develop this evening over the Columbia Basin as a weak mid level wave moves up from the south. The air mass in this area is relatively dry with dew points in the lower 30s so any measurable rain from these showers will be isolated in nature. These showers are tracking into the Spokane area with an update to extend the chance of showers through the remainder of the evening and to expand this threat westward into the Coulee City and Ephrata areas. Elsewhere showers are winding down with the loss of daytime heating. The mid level wave is weak and thus would not expect showers over the basin to linger into the overnight hours and the HRRR is in agreement with this. The rest of the forecast details remain on track. Another wave over southern Idaho will track north into Thursday morning clipping SE Washington and the Central Panhandle Mountains giving these areas an increasing threat for light showers with snow levels lowering to 2500-3000 feet. Lastly, seeing some clearing on satellite this evening over portions of the northern valleys especially southern Ferry and Stevens counties. This in combination with a moist boundary layer will lead to increasing fog and stratus tonight. JW && .AVIATION... 00Z TAFs: The band of rain has exited the area but daytime heating will result in continued isolated/scattered showers over SE WA, Spokane area into the Idaho Panhandle through the evening. Concerning fog/stratus potential tonight...much drier air in the boundary layer over Central Washington should result in continued VFR conditions at KEAT/KMWH. This drier air will have a hard time making much progress east due to relative light pressure gradients. This will likely lead to an expansion of stratus with patchy fog over Eastern WA/N Idaho overnight and lingering into Thursday morning. MVFR CIGS will be common with IFR/LIFR conditions possible.
